BIO

Octavian Moldovean holds both a Bachelor and Master of Music Degree from the National University of Music in Bucharest, and a second Masters Degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He is currently enrolled in the BGSU Doctorate of Musical Arts program.

 

 

Octavian has performed with the National Radio Orchestra and the "George Enescu" Philharmonic in Bucharest. He has also attended master classes with many world-class flutists, including Jacques-Pierre Artaud, Benoit Fromanger, William Bennett, Juliette Hurel, Philippa Davies, Michael Cox, Janosh Balint and Michael Martin Kofler.

In 2010, Octavian was selected to represent Romania and Europe in the Cultural Visitor’s Program sponsored by the Kennedy Center Institute in Washington D.C. In addition to concerts and workshops, he received private lessons from prominent American flutists Cynthia Meyers (Boston Symphony Orchestra), Stephani Stang (National Symphony), and Carol Wincenc (Juilliard School).

 

A recipient of an Erasmus grant in 2011, Octavian spent six months at the Conservatory of Strasbourg as a student of flutist Mario Caroli.
 

In 2011 and 2013, the Foundation "Princess Margarita of Romania" honored him with two royal scholarships. Octavian also benefited from the "International Summer Academy" which awarded him a scholarship to their program in Vienna.

During 2012 he received a full scholarship to "The Holter Music Festival” in Italy, made his recital debut at the Romanian Athenaeum, and performed his first concert as a soloist with the University Orchestra in Bucharest.

 

During this time he also became a member of the "Emisia 2" band, which combines various music styles such as pop, rock and jazz through free improvisation.

 

Octavian spent February 2013 under full scholarship to the European Improvisation Intensive Project at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (Netherlands).

 

Awarded State Winner at the MTNA Competition (Music Teachers National Association) in 2014 and 2015, Octavian represented the state of Ohio at the East Central Division of the competition, where he received honorable mention two years in a row.

 

Pro Musica and CMA scholarships have helped him in his development process. In 2015 he won first place at the Douglas Wayland Chamber Music Competition. During the same year, Octavian was awarded Second Prize for the Tuesday Musical Association Competition, and two years later in 2017 he received First Prize.

​

An avid orchestral player, Octavian is Co-Principal Flute of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra and regularly collaborates with the Lima Symphony and the Perrysburg Symphony, and occasionally appears with the Toledo Symphony.

 

In 2018, Octavian was one of a handful of players invited to participate in the National Audition Tour of the New World Symphony Orchestra. He was also named an alternate for the National Repertory Orchestra. In 2018, he also completed an internship in classical music radio with WGTE Public Media in Toledo, Ohio.

In 2019, Octavian was awarded Second Prize in the Central Ohio Flute Association Competition (COFA) in Columbus, Ohio. Before the pandemic in 2020, he was invited to play in The Cleveland Pops Orchestra. Most recently, Octavian has graduated from BGSU with his Doctorate of Musical Arts with a specialization in contemporary music.
